A Pennsylvania jury recently ordered ExxonMobil to pay $725.5 million to a former mechanic who claimed that toxic chemicals in the company’s gasoline and solvents caused his cancer. The verdict came after a trial in a state court in Philadelphia, where the mechanic alleged he was exposed to benzene in ExxonMobil products while working at a gas station between 1975 and 1980.

Exxon was found liable for negligently failing to warn about the health risks of benzene, which the EPA has classified as a known carcinogen. The verdict, all in compensatory damages, was a significant win for the former mechanic, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2019.

The mechanic’s attorney, Patrick Wigle, highlighted the importance of the verdict, stating that ExxonMobil has known for decades that benzene can cause cancer but failed to adequately warn the public about it. The company plans to appeal the verdict.

Benzene is commonly used in motor fuels and various industrial applications in the US. The EPA regulates the amount of benzene permissible in fuels, citing its presence in emissions from burning coal and oil, car exhaust, and gas station evaporation.

The ruling serves as a warning about the risks associated with benzene exposure, particularly in the workplace and through everyday activities like fueling up at gas stations. ExxonMobil’s role in the case raises questions about corporate responsibility and the need for transparency regarding harmful chemicals in consumer products.
