Google has revealed Wear OS 5 at its I/O developer conference today, showcasing new features and improvements coming with the platform. The company is still finalizing the release, but the developer preview already boasts enhanced battery life. Wear OS 5 promises to consume 20 percent less power than Wear OS 4 during activities like running a marathon, building on the battery life improvements seen in the previous version. Google has also provided developers with a guide on conserving power to create more efficient apps.

Additionally, Google has introduced new features in Watch Face Format, allowing developers to create a variety of watch faces displaying different information. This update enables apps to show current weather information, like temperature and chance of rain, at a glance. The platform now supports new complication types, including “goal progress” and “weighted elements,” to represent data subsets.

Wear OS 5 could spark new apps and functionalities in existing apps. Google’s Health Connect API for the platform permits apps to access user data even when running in the background and grants access to health information over the past 30 days with user consent. The Health Services API in Wear OS 5 supports new running data types such as ground contact time and stride length.

While a release date for Wear OS 5 hasn’t been announced, looking at the previous launch with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 in August 2023, we could anticipate a launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy 7 or the Pixel Watch 3 later this year. Stay tuned for updates on Wear OS 5.
