In a recent update, Neuralink, the brain-computer interface startup led by Elon Musk, revealed that the first invasive brain chip implanted in a human has experienced some issues. Neuron-surveilling threads seem to have become dislodged from the participant’s brain, causing concern within the company. It remains unclear why this occurred, how many threads were affected, or if there are any safety risks involved.

The implant, which consists of 64 flexible threads with a total of 1,024 electrodes, is designed to detect neuronal activity in the brain. These threads, thinner than a human hair, are individually inserted by Neuralink’s surgical robot with the goal of recording signals from neurons to enable actions like moving a cursor on a screen.

The first clinical trial participant, Noland Arbaugh, who suffered from quadriplegia after a diving accident, received the implant in January. Despite some setbacks, including the retraction of threads and a decrease in the bits-per-second rate used to measure control accuracy, Neuralink has been able to make modifications to improve the implant’s performance.

While the specific cause of the thread displacement is still unknown, possible factors such as air trapped in the skull post-surgery have been mentioned. Neuralink has been working to address these issues and has reported improved BPS rates after implementing algorithm modifications.

The company has informed the FDA about the situation and plans to conduct two more implantations this year as part of ongoing trials. Despite these challenges, Neuralink remains committed to advancing brain-computer interface technology and enhancing the lives of individuals with neurological conditions.
