Union Minister L. Murugan highlighted that since Narendra Modi took office, incidents of fishermen being killed in Palk Bay have ceased. Speaking to the media in Tirunelveli, he noted that the Ministry of External Affairs promptly intervenes whenever Tamil Nadu fishermen are apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy. Murugan emphasized that fishermen now have better protection and are being encouraged to explore deep-sea fishing, which offers increased safety and income. He mentioned that the government is providing essential gadgets to help fishermen avoid crossing international boundaries. Additionally, he criticized the previous UPA government for its neglect of fishermen’s safety and urged respect for Scheduled Castes by the current Tamil Nadu administration.

Union Minister L. Murugan recently shared that reports of fishermen being killed in the Palk Bay area between India and Sri Lanka have significantly decreased since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office. Speaking at a press conference in Tirunelveli, he emphasized that the Ministry of External Affairs promptly addresses any incidents involving Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy, ensuring their swift return home.

Murugan highlighted the troubling past under the previous UPA government when incidents of violence against fishermen were more frequent. He reassured that the current Modi government is committed to protecting fishermen’s livelihoods and has been promoting safer, more profitable deep-sea fishing alternatives. In this initiative, fishermen only need to contribute a small percentage of the costs, with the government providing substantial subsidies and loans.

The minister also mentioned the introduction of new gadgets designed to alert fishermen, helping them avoid potential accusations of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. He expressed confidence that the government’s ongoing efforts would lead to a permanent resolution of these issues.

In addition to these measures, Murugan discussed the BJP’s target of enrolling one crore new members in Tamil Nadu by October 2024, highlighting the party’s improvement in polling performance.

Overall, Murugan’s statements mark a significant shift in the treatment and protection of fishermen in the region, aligning with broader governmental efforts to ensure their safety and economic well-being.
