Jaishankar, urging swift action for the release of 37 Tamil fishermen and their boats detained by Sri Lankan authorities on September 21. In his letter, Gandhi expressed concern over the frequent arrests of Indian fishermen crossing maritime boundaries and highlighted the significant hardship these incidents cause to the affected families. Both leaders are advocating for immediate government actions to protect the rights and livelihoods of these fishermen.

In recent news, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has taken action concerning the situation of 37 Tamil fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan authorities. Gandhi wrote a letter to the External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, urging for immediate intervention to secure the release of the detained fishermen and their boats. The fishermen were apprehended on September 21 after allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Gandhi emphasized the seriousness of the issue, pointing out that these incidents are becoming increasingly common. He stated that the seized fishing boats are community assets, bought through pooled resources from local fishermen. The Congress leader condemned the seizure of these boats and highlighted the unfair penalties imposed on small-scale Indian fisherfolk by Sri Lankan authorities.

This letter comes on the heels of a similar request from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who also reached out to Jaishankar for help in halting heavy fines levied against the fishermen and securing their release. CM Stalin noted that the Sri Lankan courts impose penalties that are often unaffordable for the fishermen. Furthermore, he mentioned another case where 28 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were detained by the Bahrain Coast Guard, calling for necessary legal assistance to protect their rights.

The plight of the fishermen has raised significant concern among Indian officials, reflecting ongoing tensions regarding fishing rights and maritime boundaries in the region. As the situation develops, many are hoping for a swift resolution and the safe return of the fishermen to their families.
