On September 17, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Subhadra Scheme in Odisha, aiming to benefit over one crore women with a ₹50,000 financial support each over five years. This initiative aligns with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s manifesto, which helped them secure victory in the recent elections, ending a 24-year tenure of the previous Chief Minister. In a significant first step, ₹5,000 was transferred to the bank accounts of 25 lakh women, costing the government over ₹1,250 crore. The scheme is designed to empower women, enhance their contribution to development, and includes aspects of digital currency for added convenience in spending. Modi also inaugurated significant railway and highway projects to boost regional infrastructure and connectivity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently launched a significant initiative in Odisha called the Subhadra Scheme. This program aims to support over one crore women by providing them with ₹50,000 each over a five-year span. The initiative was a major promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the recent elections, helping them secure victory and end the long-standing rule of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
In the first Cabinet meeting led by new Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, the state government announced that financial assistance would begin within the first 100 days of taking office. Following the launch, PM Modi facilitated the transfer of ₹5,000 to the bank accounts of more than 25 lakh women, costing the government around ₹1,250 crore for this initial payment.
As of now, about 72 lakh women have registered to benefit from this scheme, which will require an investment of ₹55,825 crore from the state government. The money will be distributed in two installments annually over the next five years, making it easier for women to access these funds directly without any intermediaries.
PM Modi emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment in the development journey of Odisha, stating that a significant portion of progress stems from the contributions of half the population—women. He also noted that the scheme would integrate with the Reserve Bank of India’s digital currency pilot project, allowing women to spend their grants digitally.
In addition to the Subhadra Scheme, PM Modi inaugurated railway projects worth over ₹2,800 crores to enhance Odisha’s infrastructure and connectivity. He also laid the foundation for National Highway projects amounting to more than ₹1,000 crores.
This initiative marks a hopeful new beginning for women in Odisha, providing them with financial support and encouraging their role in the state’s development.
