On September 30, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing the need to prevent the escalation of conflict in West Asia. The conversation came shortly after Israel’s airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah in Beirut. Modi expressed India’s commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safe release of hostages held by Hamas, which currently includes around 100 individuals. He reiterated support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict while maintaining a neutral stance on Hamas. Following rising violence, India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in Lebanon, where around 3,000 Indians currently reside.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the ongoing conflicts in West Asia. The conversation was particularly timely, occurring just days after Israel’s operation that resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah in Beirut. During the call, Modi emphasized the importance of avoiding further escalation in the region and reiterated India’s position against terrorism.

Modi stated, “Terrorism has no place in our world. It is crucial to prevent regional escalation and ensure the safe release of all hostages.” Currently, around 100 hostages remain under Hamas control, a situation stemming from last year’s conflict that began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

India has consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict but has yet to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization, despite requests from Israel. This diplomatic balancing act highlights India’s unique position in the region. Recently, Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during the UN General Assembly, expressing strong support for the Palestinian people.

As tensions rise, India has also issued a travel advisory for its citizens in Lebanon, urging them to leave due to the escalating violence. This advisory affects about 3,000 Indian nationals currently residing in the country.

This ongoing situation underscores the delicate balance needed in international diplomacy as leaders work towards peace in a tumultuous landscape.
