Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed disappointment that West Bengal has not received any financial aid from the central government to address the recent floods. While speaking to the media in Siliguri after a review meeting, she criticized the lack of response from the Prime Minister regarding the state’s concerns. The floods, caused by heavy water release from Nepal and nearby states, have adversely affected districts like Malda and Murshidabad. Banerjee announced compensation for families affected by the floods and urged residents to remain vigilant during the ongoing situation. She also highlighted the need for better disaster management, stressing the importance of maintaining peace during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her disappointment on Sunday, stating that the West Bengal government has not received any financial support from the Central government to address the severe flooding affecting the state. She made these remarks while speaking to the media in Siliguri, following an administrative review meeting that included state officials and district magistrates from the hardest-hit areas.

During the meeting, Banerjee highlighted the struggles faced by the state, saying that despite multiple letters sent to the Prime Minister, responses come from lower-ranking officials rather than direct support. She pointed out the tragic loss of two lives due to flooding in Malda, for which she provided compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each affected family. Additionally, she offered Rs 8 lakh to the family of four who suffered loss due to electrocution in Gajoldoba.

Banerjee noted that the recent release of 6 lakh cusecs of water from Nepal has led to significant flooding in districts like Malda and Murshidabad. She criticized the lack of dredging at the Farakka barrage for the past two decades, claiming it could have mitigated the flooding. The Chief Minister also warned residents of Bhutni to stay in makeshift camps as more rain and water discharge are expected in the coming days.

As the Durga Puja festival approaches, she urged everyone to maintain peace and avoid using the crisis to create disturbances. In a show of support for local businesses, she announced compensation for the shops destroyed in a fire, allocating Rs 1 lakh for completely destroyed shops and Rs 50,000 for those partially damaged. Banerjee expressed frustration over the Central government’s lack of assistance during times of natural calamity, asserting that Bengal is frequently left waiting for promised aid.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by West Bengal during natural disasters and the need for greater support from the Central government.

What does “Not a single paisa from Centre to combat floods” mean?
It means that the central government has not given any money to help with flood relief efforts.

Why is it important for the Centre to provide help during floods?
The central government’s support can provide necessary resources, aid, and funds to help affected areas recover more quickly.

Are state governments able to handle floods on their own?
State governments can take some action, but they often need more money and resources from the central government for effective response and recovery.

What are the consequences of not getting funds from the Centre?
Without funds, it can be harder for affected communities to get the help they need, which might lead to more damage and longer recovery times.

Is there any hope for future funding for flood relief?
It’s possible that future discussions or emergencies might lead to the central government providing funds, but it depends on the situation and policies.
