West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Indian Railways, claiming it has set a “world record” for derailments after a recent incident involving empty goods train wagons in Jalpaiguri. She expressed concern over public safety in train travel and questioned the absence of the railway minister during these emergencies. Banerjee highlighted her own achievements as railway minister, stating she had invested Rs 2 lakh crore in projects for West Bengal. In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that rail accidents have significantly decreased in the last decade, contrasting the past figures when Banerjee held the position. The ongoing debate underscores mounting concerns about railway safety in India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about the safety of Indian Railways following a recent derailment incident in Jalpaiguri district. She pointed out that the Railways seems to have created a “world record” in derailments, stating, “What is happening with the Railways? Even today, there is news of derailment.” This comment came after five wagons of an empty goods train jumped the tracks early in the morning, though thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Banerjee expressed that people are now fearful of traveling by train and criticized the Railway Minister for not being present to address these safety issues, instead of only seeking votes during elections. She also reminded everyone of her previous tenure as Railway Minister, when she claimed to have secured funding for various projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore for West Bengal.

In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the decline in rail accidents over the past decade, contrasting this with the situation when Banerjee was overseeing the ministry. He stated that accidents have decreased significantly, falling to less than one-third of what they were during her time.

The topic of railway safety is crucial, as incidents like this can shake public confidence in traveling by train. The contrasting views of the two leaders highlight the ongoing tension surrounding rail safety in India.
