West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Central Government’s handling of flood control in a second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She announced the state’s withdrawal from the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee due to a lack of cooperation and unilateral water releases from the Damodar Valley Corporation, which she says have contributed to flooding in South Bengal. Banerjee refuted claims by Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil that decisions were made collaboratively, stating that critical decisions are often taken without consulting West Bengal. She called for urgent implementation of flood management projects and requested the Prime Minister’s personal intervention to address the ongoing issues affecting the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has officially notified Prime Minister Narendra Modi of her government’s immediate withdrawal from the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC). This action, she explains, comes in response to ongoing issues regarding flood management and insufficient cooperation from the central government. Banerjee’s decision follows her earlier complaint about the unilateral release of water from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) reservoirs, which she claims has contributed to severe flooding in South Bengal.

In a letter dated September 21, Banerjee expressed her disagreement with Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil’s comments that water releases were coordinated through the committee with input from all relevant parties, including representatives from West Bengal. Banerjee contends that critical decisions regarding water management are made without proper consultation with state officials and often occur with very short notice, hampering effective disaster response.

Furthermore, she highlighted the need for comprehensive flood management strategies, emphasizing that West Bengal cannot shoulder the financial burden of these projects alone. Banerjee pointed to two significant flood management schemes that have received investment approvals but are still pending necessary support from the central government.

In light of these challenges and the apparent neglect of West Bengal’s concerns, Banerjee reiterated her demands for urgent intervention from the Prime Minister. Notably, amidst this official communication, notable resignations occurred from the DVC board, signaling the seriousness of the ongoing dispute over flood management practices in the region.
