Political commentator R Kannan recently released his book, “The DMK Years: Ascent, Descent, Survival,” detailing the DMK party’s journey since its founding in 1949 by CN Annadurai to its current prominence under MK Stalin. In an interview, Kannan addresses the challenges the DMK faces, particularly with Hindu nationalism on the rise and the need for religious outreach. He notes that while the party originally focused on social change, it is now seen as prioritizing electoral success. With the 2026 assembly elections approaching, he warns that if actor Vijay aligns with rivals, the DMK could face significant challenges. Kannan also discusses the leadership style of MK Stalin and the importance of Udhayanidhi’s upcoming role in the party’s future.

Political commentator and author R Kannan has recently released a new book titled “The DMK Years: Ascent, Descent, Survival.” This book chronicles the journey of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, tracing its history from its establishment by CN Annadurai in 1949 to its current leadership under MK Stalin. In a conversation with journalist Divya Chandrababu, Kannan reflects on the party’s evolution over 75 years, particularly in light of the BJP’s growing influence in India.

In his interview, Kannan points out that the rise of Hindu nationalism has compelled the DMK to engage more with religious sentiments, a significant shift from its original rationalist principles. He notes, “It is unclear if the DMK is still the party of the modest or is for the modest.” This change is evident as the party recently held a conference for Murugan, a Hindu deity, in an attempt to counteract criticisms of its secular stance. Kannan also highlights the importance of the DMK’s organizational strength, but warns that if popular actors like Vijay form alliances with the opposition, it could pose a threat to the party’s dominance in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections.

With regard to the current leadership, Kannan assesses MK Stalin’s performance as Chief Minister. He acknowledges that while Stalin has had reasonable success, he appears somewhat disconnected from grassroots party members and the general public. He expresses that Udhayanidhi, Stalin’s son, will face significant challenges as he steps into a more prominent role within the party after Stalin’s tenure.

This insightful analysis sheds light on the evolving dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics and the challenges faced by the DMK as it navigates a changing landscape influenced by national trends.
