In Kolkata, junior doctors have continued their protest for 32 days, defying a Supreme Court order to return to work. They are demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital. The doctors want the removal of high-ranking officials, including the Kolkata police commissioner and health secretary. Despite an invitation from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a meeting, the doctors found it insulting, as they were limited to only ten representatives. Their ongoing strike has disrupted healthcare services and reportedly led to the deaths of 23 patients. The protestors symbolically marched with brooms to call for reform in the state’s health sector, while some individuals connected to the alleged financial irregularities at the hospital have been remanded in custody.

In West Bengal, junior doctors have continued their protests despite a Supreme Court order requiring them to return to work by 5 PM on Tuesday. They are demanding justice for a female trainee who was tragically found dead at RG Kar Hospital, as well as the removal of high-ranking officials including the Kolkata police commissioner and several members of the health department. The doctors have now been protesting for 32 days, disrupting healthcare services in state-run hospitals across the region.

The state government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has reached out to the protesters, inviting them for discussions in the hopes of resolving the ongoing conflict. However, the doctors find the invitation disrespectful, especially since it was sent by the health secretary, who they want to resign. They also criticize the limit on meeting participants, viewing it as humiliating.

The Supreme Court has cautioned that continued refusal to work might lead to serious consequences for the doctors. Additionally, notices have been issued to 51 doctors by RG Kar Hospital authorities for allegedly disrupting the hospital’s operations. Despite these pressures, the doctors are determined to continue their strike until their demands are met.

The protests have spilled over into public demonstrations, with doctors marching to the health department headquarters, bringing symbolic items like brooms to signify the need for a clean-up in the healthcare system. The situation is further complicated by an ongoing inquiry into financial irregularities involving the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, who is now under judicial custody.

The unrest in the medical community continues to escalate, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and resolution for the sake of healthcare stability in West Bengal.
