Atishi has officially taken over as the Chief Minister of Delhi, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned due to corruption allegations related to the liquor policy. Drawing a comparison to Bharat from Hindu mythology, she expressed her commitment to manage the government for the next four months while keeping a chair vacant for Kejriwal, symbolizing his anticipated return. Atishi praised Kejriwal’s leadership and integrity, emphasizing his dedication to honesty amid accusations from political opponents. She will oversee 13 departments, including education and finance, until the next assembly elections, where Kejriwal hopes to regain public trust and his position.

NEW DELHI: Atishi has officially taken over as the Chief Minister of Delhi, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned earlier this month amid corruption allegations linked to the now-scrapped liquor policy. Atishi drew a meaningful comparison to Bharat from the epic Ramayana, expressing her commitment to lead for the next four months while awaiting Kejriwal’s return to the position.

“I have taken charge as the Delhi Chief Minister. Today my pain is the same as that of Bharat when Lord Rama went into exile. Like Bharat kept the sandals of Lord Ram, I will run the Delhi government for the next four months,” she stated after assuming office.

She praised Kejriwal for his integrity and the challenges he faced, emphasizing that he has always aimed to govern with dignity. Kejriwal, she noted, resigned because the ongoing allegations hurt him, and he will return only when the people of Delhi express their trust in him again through future elections.

Atishi also left a chair vacant for Kejriwal in the Chief Minister’s office, saying it symbolizes his rightful place and expressing hope that the public will elect him again. She will oversee 13 departments, including Education, Finance, Power, and Water.

This transition in leadership follows Kejriwal’s resignation, which came two days after he was granted bail in a corruption case, underscoring the ongoing political turmoil in the capital.
