The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) took a strong stance against Member of Parliament Bhartruhari Mahtab on Tuesday for his editorial supporting the name change of Ravenshaw University, published in his local newspaper. BJD MLA Pratap Deb criticized the editorial as unfortunate, suggesting it was driven by sycophancy rather than solid reasoning.
Deb pointed out that Mahtab, who represents Cuttack and has considerable experience in Parliament, misrepresented the contributions of the former Mayurbhanj king in the university’s history. According to Deb, the king played a crucial role in the formation of modern Odisha and dismissing his actions as selfish is unacceptable.
Additionally, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, a member of the Ravenshaw Heritage Forum, echoed Deb’s sentiments. He believes Mahtab’s editorial is unjust and advises the MP to reconsider his stance, indicating there should always be room for changing one’s opinion over time.
So far, no response has come from Mahtab regarding the backlash against his views on the name change issue.
