West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has agreed to several demands from striking junior doctors, including removing key officials, following the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. While the government has pledged ₹100 crore for hospital infrastructure and formed a task force for safety, the doctors have not yet called off their strike, awaiting the implementation of these promises. Banerjee reassured that no disciplinary action would be taken against the protesting doctors. However, the doctors express concerns over incomplete discussions regarding corruption in hospitals and are still advocating for the removal of the health department’s principal secretary. Their next steps will be decided after a Supreme Court hearing.

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took major steps on Monday night to address the concerns of junior doctors who have been protesting in the state. Following a meeting with the doctors, she agreed to most of their demands, which included the removal of key officials like Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal and the directors of medical education and health services. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Despite Banerjee’s acceptance of these demands, the junior doctors have not ended their strike. They are awaiting concrete actions from the government to implement these promises. During the meeting, both sides agreed to record the minutes of their discussions, marking a step toward transparency.

The minutes revealed that the government would allocate ₹100 crore for improving hospital infrastructure and establishing a special task force to enhance safety measures within healthcare facilities. Additionally, a grievance redressal system is set to be introduced across hospitals in the state.

Banerjee expressed her commitment to addressing the doctors’ issues and called for them to resume their duties, assuring them that no disciplinary measures would be taken against those who protested. However, some lingering concerns remain, particularly regarding the principal secretary of the health department and ongoing discussions about corruption in hospitals.

As the situation unfolds, the junior doctors plan to assess their next steps after a Supreme Court hearing related to the case. The fight for justice and safety in the medical community in West Bengal continues.
