On March 8, 2025, hundreds of women in Islamabad participated in the Aurat March, advocating for gender equality and an end to violence against women. This annual event, which began in Karachi in 2018, has grown into a significant movement across Pakistan. This year’s theme, “Feminist Politics vs Patriarchal State,” highlighted the fight against an oppressive system that silences women and marginalized groups. Despite facing opposition from conservatives and police restrictions, organizers like Shaheena Kausar emphasized the importance of continuing the march, especially amidst ongoing injustices. Participants, including men advocating for women’s rights, united to push for change and a future where women can stand equal to men in society.

ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, hundreds of women took to the streets of the capital city, carrying signs and chanting for equality. They called for an end to gender-based violence and sexual harassment in Pakistan. This event was part of the Aurat March, which highlights women’s rights and empowerment.

The Aurat March began in 2018 in Karachi for International Women’s Day and has grown to become a nationwide event held in several cities. Despite its growth, the march faces criticism from conservative groups who claim it’s funded by Western entities to push inappropriate agendas. The organizers, however, assert that the march is driven by local initiatives, emphasizing the need for women’s equal rights and opportunities.

This year’s Islamabad march focused on the theme “Feminist Politics vs Patriarchal State.” Participants gathered at the National Press Club to voice their opposition against a state that tries to silence women, minorities, and transgender individuals. Ismat Raza Shahjahan, a prominent activist, expressed the importance of continuing the struggle for gender equality.

Event organizer Shaheena Kausar raised concerns about police restrictions that limited their march. Despite having applied for permission, they were only allowed to march a short distance. Kausar defended the need for the march, stating that injustices against women do not stop during Ramadan, the month when Muslims fast.

Statistics highlight the challenges women face in Pakistan: only 21 percent participate in the workforce, and less than 20 percent of girls in rural areas complete secondary education, according to the United Nations. The tight grip of “honor” culture often dictates women’s choices in education, employment, and personal relationships, leading to tragic consequences for those who deviate from societal norms.

One Islamabad resident, Moin, shared why he supports the Aurat March every year. He wants to help create a future where women and men work side by side for equality. The march seeks not only to raise awareness but also to inspire change in society regarding women’s rights and opportunities.

The Aurat March represents a growing movement in Pakistan, emphasizing the urgent need for gender equality and women’s empowerment in a challenging social landscape.
