Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey Launch Bitcoin Non-Profit Btrust to Support Africa and India
Jay-Z and Block CEO Jack Dorsey have partnered to create a Bitcoin non-profit called Btrust. The goal of Btrust is to support Bitcoin technology and financial services in Africa and India. The two moguls recently acquired a company called Qala, which trains African Bitcoin and Lightning engineers. Qala has now been rebranded as the Btrust Builders Programme.
Acquisition of Qala
- Btrust acquired Qala because they had the link to the Bitcoin talent in Africa but lacked the resources.
Challenges Faced
- Generosity and opportunities in Bitcoin are influenced by the price of Bitcoin, which can fluctuate.
- During bear markets, Bitcoin companies tighten their budgets, making it challenging to hire.
Board Member’s Statement
Ojoma Ochai, a Btrust Board Member, expressed pride in welcoming Femi and his team to Btrust. Ochai stated that Qala’s outreach and programs have made significant progress in driving open-source development in the Global South through education, aligning with Btrust’s core mission.
Past Collaboration
Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey previously collaborated to create a Bitcoin Academy for residents of Marcy Houses, a public housing complex where Jay-Z used to live.
