Software Engineer Cheated in Cryptocurrency Fraud: Complaint Filed

AHMEDABAD: A software engineer working with a Gandhinagar firm on Saturday filed a complaint with Cybercrime police alleging that a woman cheated him of Rs 1.34 crore in a cryptocurrency fraud.

Kuldeep Patel, a resident of Saijpur-Bogha in the city, said in his FIR that on June 23 he had sent a request to a woman named Aditi Patel on a matrimonial website. Patel said that he works as a team leader in a software developer firm in Gandhinagar.

Woman Claims to Have Import-Export Business in the UK

The woman responded to Patel and said that she lived in a residential society in Maninagar and had an import and export business in the UK.

Investment in Banocoin Cryptocurrency

She then sent a screenshot of a cryptocurrency named Banocoin and told Patel to invest in it to get good returns.

Investment and Profits

  • Patel first invested Rs 1 lakh in the crypto business and recorded a profit of 78 USDT (US dollar tether), a cryptocurrency.
  • He withdrew 50 USDT later.
  • Patel then kept investing for more returns.

Account Frozen and Additional Investment Demand

According to the FIR, Patel invested Rs 1.34 crore in 18 transactions between July 20 and August 31. But when he tried to withdraw Rs 2.59 lakh from his account on September 3, he was told that his account had been frozen.

He contacted a customer care number given to him by Aditi Patel on which he was told to invest Rs 35 lakh more to defreeze his account. When he tried to contact her, she did not respond to him.

Complaint Filed and Investigation Initiated

By that time, he realized that he was being duped by cybercrooks and approached the police.

Cybercrime police of the city filed a complaint of breach of trust, cheating, and criminal conspiracy under IPC and began an investigation.
