The West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL) has achieved coal self-sufficiency for its thermal plants, reducing reliance on Coal India Ltd. As of August 2024, WBPDCL has dispatched 9.1 million tonnes from its own mines and aims to produce 20 million tonnes this fiscal year. A significant portion of this output comes from the Pachwara North block in Jharkhand, expected to yield 15 million tonnes in FY’25. Despite challenges like limited evacuation infrastructure and environmental concerns in transporting coal, WBPDCL plans to increase production and potentially commercialize excess coal. The power sector is performing well overall, with a stable outlook for generation and transmission, while distribution companies face challenges.

State-owned West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL) has announced that it has become self-sufficient in coal supply for its thermal power plants. This achievement, which ends its dependency on Coal India Ltd, marks a significant milestone for the company. WBPDCL aims to produce approximately 20 million tonnes of coal during this fiscal year, an increase from last year’s production of 18.41 million tonnes.

In August 2024, WBPDCL reported dispatches from its captive mines had already reached 9.1 million tonnes. Chanchal Goswami, the company’s Director of Mining, emphasized that this year, they have no reliance on Coal India, having previously procured around 3.85 million tonnes of coal from them. Most of WBPDCL’s coal production comes from the Pachwara North block in Jharkhand, which is projected to produce around 15 million tonnes this fiscal year.

Despite these advancements, Goswami noted that the ramp-up in production is being hampered by inadequate evacuation infrastructure, particularly for coal transportation, which faces environmental challenges. Looking forward, WBPDCL plans to submit a proposal for mining that could exceed its captive requirements, allowing for commercial sales of excess coal.

The power sector’s overall outlook remains stable, with recent ratings showing more upgrades than downgrades due to improved operational records and debt refinancing among firms in the industry. However, distribution companies still face negative projections.
