Vodafone Idea’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, has announced that the company is in talks with the government regarding its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues amidst ongoing financial struggles. Following a recent Supreme Court ruling against telcos, including Vodafone Idea, which challenged the calculation of their substantial AGR liabilities, the company is focusing on raising debt funding within the next two months. Despite these challenges, Moondra reassured that their long-term business strategy remains on track, not relying on potential financial relief from these AGR dues. Vodafone Idea aims to expand its 4G coverage and has secured a significant deal with major vendors to support its growth while addressing its substantial debt obligations.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) is making headlines as it engages in discussions with the government regarding its hefty adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. In a recent update, CEO Akshaya Moondra shared with analysts that the telecom company is optimistic about securing much-needed debt funding in the upcoming months after finishing a techno-economic evaluation by an independent party.

Just last week, the Supreme Court declined to consider a set of petitions from various telecom companies, including Vi, which were aimed at reducing their total AGR liabilities estimated at a staggering Rs 1.43 trillion. These companies argued that there were ‘arithmetic errors’ in how the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) calculated the dues.

Moondra remained steadfast in his message, clarifying that although a favorable court ruling could have eased financial pressures, the company’s long-term revival strategy stays unchanged. The Supreme Court’s decision does not impact cash flows, as the company’s financial plans had not included an anticipated reduction in AGR dues.

The government holds a significant 23 percent stake in Vi, making it the largest stakeholder. The company has calculated its dues at Rs 21,533 crore, while the DoT estimates it to be around Rs 58,254 crore. So far, Vi has paid only Rs 7,900 crore of this liability.

At the end of the first quarter of FY25, Vi’s total debt reached Rs 2.09 trillion. This includes obligations for deferred spectrum payments and an AGR liability of Rs 70,320 crore. With payment moratoriums ending in October 2025, the company has impending payments totaling Rs 12,000 crore by March 2026, along with annual government payments of Rs 43,000 crore for the next five years.

Vi is actively working with various lenders to secure approximately Rs 25,000 crore in fund-based loans and Rs 10,000 crore in non-fund-based loans. Moondra mentioned that they expect the bank funding process to finalize within the next two months. Despite raising Rs 24,000 crore in equity, there remain concerns among banking officials about the company’s ongoing payment obligations.

Additionally, Vodafone Idea recently announced a $3.6 billion deal with global vendors Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung to expand its 4G coverage significantly. This deal, which is part of a larger $6.6 billion investment plan over the next three years, is aimed at extending 4G services to 1.2 billion Indians.

With these developments, the future of Vodafone Idea will be crucial to watch as it navigates through its financial challenges and strives to enhance its service offerings in a competitive Market.
