Verizon is set to acquire Frontier Communications for $20 billion in an all-cash deal, announced on Thursday. This strategic move aims to expand Verizon’s subscriber base and enhance its competitive edge against rivals AT&T and T-Mobile, which offer extensive unlimited plans and bundled services. Verizon has proposed $38.50 per share for Frontier, a 37.3% premium over its recent stock price. The acquisition would give Verizon access to Frontier’s 2.2 million fiber subscribers across 25 states, complementing its existing 7.4 million users. While analysts believe this deal will provide only a modest boost to Verizon’s footprint in fiber internet coverage, it will help the company reach more potential customers across various regions. The deal is expected to close within 18 months.

Verizon Acquires Frontier Communications in $20 Billion Deal

Verizon announced on September 5, 2024, that it will acquire Frontier Communications, a fiber-optic internet provider, in an all-cash deal valued at $20 billion. This strategic move aims to expand Verizon’s subscriber base and enhance its competitive edge against rivals like AT&T and T-Mobile.

Verizon is offering $38.50 per share for Frontier, which represents a 37.3 percent premium over Frontier’s closing stock price prior to the acquisition news. Although Frontier’s shares were trading below the offer price at $35.10, they had surged nearly 38 percent in the previous trading session, indicating strong Market interest.

With this acquisition, Verizon will significantly increase its fiber subscribers, combining Frontier’s 2.2 million with its own 7.4 million users across various states. The deal will enable Verizon to enhance its fiber network presence in the Midwest, Texas, and California, regions where it previously lacked coverage.

Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg described the acquisition of Frontier as a strategic fit that allows the company to compete more effectively in multiple markets. The newly combined companies will have approximately 25 million fiber passings, compared to AT&T’s 28 million, giving Verizon an opportunity to strengthen its Market position.

The transaction is expected to close in about 18 months. However, analysts suggest that while this deal offers some growth potential for Verizon, it may provide only a modest overall boost, as the company’s fiber network currently covers less than 10 percent of the US Market.

This acquisition marks a notable return for Verizon, which sold its TV and internet business in select states to Frontier in a $10.54 billion deal back in 2016.
