The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), a collaboration between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for Asia’s largest slum redevelopment. This project aims to transform Dharavi into a modern township within seven years, offering eligible residents a new 350-square-foot home with essential amenities. Ineligible residents will be provided alternative housing options in Mumbai. The initiative is part of Maharashtra’s ambition to make Mumbai slum-free by 2030, ensuring improved infrastructure and opportunities for local businesses. With upgraded living conditions and support for livelihoods, this redevelopment is set to place India on the global stage for urban resettlement solutions.

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Hits Milestone with Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), responsible for transforming Asia’s largest slum, recently marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony—known as Bhoomi Poojan—held at the RPF grounds in Matunga. This ceremony signifies the official start of construction for the Railway staff quarters and offices, which will be handed over to the government as per project requirements.

According to sources, the state government is actively conducting a door-to-door survey to identify eligible and ineligible residents. This initiative aims to accelerate the redevelopment process while promoting inclusive development. The DRPPL, a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, is aligned with the state’s goal to make Mumbai a slum-free city by 2030.

The comprehensive plan includes mapping the approximately 600 acres of Dharavi, with an estimated seven-year timeline for the project’s completion. Eligible residents will be entitled to modern 350-square foot flats, while those deemed ineligible will be offered alternative housing within Mumbai. This endeavor is notable as it marks the first policy in Maharashtra providing housing solutions for all residents, regardless of eligibility status.

A spokesperson from DRPPL emphasized their commitment to modernizing Dharavi: “We are focused on ensuring that existing residents receive new homes without having to relocate temporarily.” The project promises to elevate the living standards for Dharavi residents, offering modern amenities, including roads, healthcare, education, and green spaces.

Ineligible residents classified under different criteria will also receive support, either through affordable homeownership options or under the affordable rental housing policy set by the state government. Notably, all non-polluting businesses in the area will be welcomed to continue their operations within the newly developed Dharavi.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project not only aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents but also aspires to set a benchmark for urban redevelopment initiatives globally.
