Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd has been awarded a 20-year patent for its innovative self-regenerating transformer breather, designed to safeguard transformers from moisture. This advanced technology enhances the lifespan of electric transformers by reducing the frequency of silica gel replacements, required only during scheduled maintenance every two years, compared to the conventional method that demands 4 to 6 replacements within the same timeframe. Developed by Tata Power DDL’s engineering team and successfully tested since 2015, this device uses waste heat from transformers to minimize moisture intake. CEO Gajanan S Kale highlighted that this patent reflects the company’s commitment to improving power supply infrastructure, ensuring reliability even in challenging weather conditions.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd has recently announced a significant achievement: it has secured a patent for its innovative self-regenerating transformer breather. This technology is set to protect transformers from moisture ingress, increasing their lifespan. The patent is valid for a term of 20 years.

The self-regenerating breather addresses a common issue faced by transformers – moisture damage. Traditionally, silica gel, which absorbs moisture, needs to be replaced multiple times before the scheduled maintenance of every two years. With this new technology, maintenance will be greatly streamlined. Silica gel will only need to be checked during regular maintenance, drastically reducing the work required to keep transformers operational.

Developed by Tata Power’s engineering team, the prototype was successfully tested back in December 2015, and pilot installations followed in 2016-2017. The device uses waste heat from the transformer to minimize moisture levels, ensuring a more reliable power supply, especially during challenging weather conditions.

Tata Power-DDL’s CEO Gajanan S Kale remarked that this patent reinforces the company’s commitment to technological advancement and enhancing the resilience of its power supply infrastructure.
