Tamil Nadu is becoming a major hub for electronics manufacturing, driven by a significant investment from Jabil Inc., which plans to establish a new facility in Tiruchirapalli. This investment of Rs 2,000 crore will create approximately 5,000 jobs, marking Jabil as the fourth Apple supplier in the state, alongside Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics. Recently, Tamil Nadu’s electronics exports surged to $9.56 billion in FY24, an impressive 78% increase from the previous year, largely due to rising iPhone exports. The state is capitalizing on the China-Plus-One strategy adopted by global companies like Apple, which aims to diversify production outside China. This trend, combined with initiatives to boost local manufacturing and skill development, is shaping Tamil Nadu into a key player in the electronics sector.

In recent developments, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a surge in electronics exports, primarily fueled by the increase in iPhone shipments. Jabil Inc, a leading American contract manufacturer for Apple, plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore by establishing a new electronics manufacturing facility in Tiruchirapalli. This ambitious project is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs and marks the entry of Tamil Nadu’s fourth Apple supplier, joining the ranks of Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics.

Earlier this year, Jabil began producing AirPod components in India, underscoring its pivotal role in Apple’s supply chain. Jabil’s recent investments reflect a broader trend of manufacturers diversifying their operations to India, following the China-Plus-One strategy adopted by global companies like Apple. This shift aims to reduce dependency on China and expand manufacturing capabilities in alternative locations.

As Tamil Nadu emerges as a key player in the electronics sector, it recorded a remarkable $9.56 billion in electronics exports for FY24—an impressive 78 percent increase from the previous year’s $5.37 billion. This growth has positioned Tamil Nadu as India’s leading electronics exporter, outpacing states like Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister M K Stalin announced the Jabil investment during his visit to the United States, highlighting the state’s commitment to boosting its industrial ecosystem. Alongside Jabil’s project, Rockwell Automation is expanding its operations in Kanchipuram with a Rs 666 crore investment, further endorsing the region’s potential for electronics manufacturing.

With Apple targeting significant expansion in its Indian operations, the company exported phones valued at Rs 34,089 crore in the first four months of the fiscal year. Apple is not only focused on international exports but is also expanding its domestic Market, which is projected to reach Rs 67,000 crore in 2023-24.

This exciting growth phase reflects Tamil Nadu’s transformation into a global electronics hub, attracting major manufacturers and significantly contributing to India’s overall economic progress.
