The Delhi High Court has ruled in favor of Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) by permanently banning the managing director of Taj Iconic Membership from using the ‘Taj’ trademark in any form. This decision comes after a trademark lawsuit linked to fraudulent activities involving the impersonation of IHCL. The court ordered the MD to pay damages and transfer the Taj Iconic domain to IHCL. The Taj brand has been associated with luxury hotels since 1903, and IHCL is currently pursuing its growth strategy, Ahvaan 2025, aiming to expand its portfolio significantly. Recently, IHCL launched the ‘Gateway’ brand to tap into new business opportunities across various Market segments.

The Delhi High Court has recently delivered a significant ruling benefiting the Tata Group-owned Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), known for its prestigious Taj hotel brand. The court has issued a permanent injunction preventing the managing director of Taj Iconic Membership from using the ‘Taj’ name in any corporate identity, content, or logo. This decision follows a trademark lawsuit initiated by IHCL against Taj Iconic, which was alleged to have engaged in fraudulent activities, including impersonating IHCL to swindle a jeweler out of a substantial amount of gold coins valued at Rs 51 lakh.

In addition to the ban, the court directed the managing director of Taj Iconic to compensate IHCL with Rs 10 lakh in damages and Rs 5 lakh for legal costs. Furthermore, the domain name associated with Taj Iconic is set to be transferred to IHCL. With the trademark ‘Taj’ in use since 1903, IHCL continues to be a leading player in the Indian hospitality sector.

This ruling comes on the heels of another significant case earlier in May, where the High Court had prohibited Shivgyan Developers Private Limited from using the ‘Vivanta’ brand, also under the Tata Group, without authorization.

Looking ahead, IHCL is actively pursuing expansion plans under its initiative called Ahvaan 2025, which aims to increase its portfolio to over 300 hotels while achieving a 33 percent earnings margin by the fiscal year 2025-26. Recently, the company announced the launch of a new ‘Gateway’ brand, designed to offer full-service accommodations aimed at capitalizing on growth opportunities in metropolitan areas and Tier II and Tier III cities.

This series of events solidifies IHCL’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its brand while focusing on robust growth strategies in the Indian hospitality landscape.
