Strengthening Ties: Singapore and China’s Navies Unite for Maritime Exercise

The navies of Singapore and China have commenced the third edition of their bilateral maritime exercise, demonstrating their strong defense relationship. This year’s Exercise Maritime Cooperation, held from September 1 to 5, is taking place at the Ma Xie Naval Base in Zhanjiang, China, with approximately 200 personnel participating. The Singapore Navy’s Formidable-class frigate, RSS Stalwart, will engage in various activities, such as vessel boarding and mine clearance. Rear-Admiral Kwan Hon Chuong emphasized that this exercise fosters mutual trust and friendship between the two naval forces. Beyond these exercises, both countries maintain regular high-level exchanges and collaborative training programs, highlighting their longstanding partnership in defense.



On September 1, 2024, the navies of Singapore and China kicked off the third edition of their bilateral maritime exercise, highlighting the close and friendly defense ties between the two nations. The Exercise Maritime Cooperation, running from September 1 to 5, aims to enhance collaboration and understanding between the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China.

The opening ceremony took place at the Ma Xie Naval Base in Zhanjiang, China, with around 200 personnel from both navies present. This exercise marks a significant milestone since it started back in 2015. According to officials, it is designed to build trust and strengthen the defense relationship between Singapore and China.

As part of the exercise, the Formidable-class frigate RSS Stalwart from Singapore will observe various activities, including vessel boarding and mine clearance operations conducted by the PLA Navy. Rear-Admiral Kwan Hon Chuong, the RSN fleet commander, emphasized the importance of this exercise in fostering mutual understanding and friendships between the two navies.

In addition to the main exercises, personnel will engage in various activities, including gunnery firing and helicopter cross-deck landings, to improve their operational skills. The two armed forces also maintain regular interactions through high-level exchanges, visits, and collaborative training courses.

This event not only showcases the commitment of both countries to maritime security but also reinforces their longstanding partnership in defense cooperation.
