EET Fuels, which operates the Stanlow oil refinery in the UK, has appointed Toyo Engineering India Pvt Ltd to lead the front-end engineering design study for a major carbon capture project. With a $1.2 billion investment planned over the next five years, EET Fuels aims to reduce emissions by 95 percent by 2030 through carbon capture, energy efficiency, and fuel switching. The project will capture around 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually from one of Europe’s largest catalytic cracking units and securely sequester it in depleted gas fields in Liverpool Bay. This initiative marks a significant step towards creating the UK’s leading energy transition hub and achieving a low-carbon future for the refinery.

EET Fuels has made a significant step in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions at its Stanlow oil refinery in the UK. The company announced its decision to appoint Toyo Engineering India Pvt Ltd to conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) study for its industrial carbon capture project. This project is part of EET Fuels’ ambitious plan to invest $1.2 billion over the next five years, aiming to cut emissions by an impressive 95 percent by 2030.

The FEED study is a crucial part of the project management process, encompassing design completion, detailed cost analysis, and project de-risking. Once this phase is completed, EET Fuels will be able to make a final investment decision (FID) on the carbon capture and storage initiative. The project is expected to capture around 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, significantly reducing emissions from one of Europe’s largest full-residue fluid catalytic cracking units.

Additionally, the captured carbon dioxide will be transported through a repurposed gas network and permanently stored in depleted gas fields in Liverpool Bay, as part of the HyNet industrial decarbonisation cluster. This innovative project is positioned to enhance the UK’s energy transition goals, while also reinforcing Stanlow’s pivotal role in supplying road transport fuels and key feedstocks for the petrochemical sector.

Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, emphasized the project’s importance in securing the future of the refinery and drastically cutting industrial carbon emissions in the region. The completion of the FEED study is expected by 2028, marking a significant milestone in the journey to establish the UK’s leading low-carbon energy hub.
