Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched three Param Rudra Super Computing Systems and a High Performance Computing system for weather and climate research. The virtual inauguration aimed to enhance India’s self-reliance in supercomputing technology. These supercomputers, costing around Rs 130 crore, are situated in Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata, and are part of the National Supercomputing Mission. They will support various research projects, including the study of astronomical phenomena and advancements in material science and earth sciences. This initiative highlights India’s commitment to boosting scientific research capabilities amid increasing demand from academia, startups, and MSMEs, although the broader project dedication event was postponed due to heavy rain in Mumbai and Pune.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a significant step in advancing India’s technological capabilities by virtually launching three Param Rudra Super Computing Systems and one High Performance Computing (HPC) system for weather and climate research. The launch occurred on September 26, 2024, and highlights the government’s commitment to self-reliance in supercomputing technology.

During a video conference, PM Modi emphasized the importance of this technology for the nation’s future, particularly encouraging young people to engage with these advancements. According to a press release, the supercomputers, funded by approximately Rs 130 crore, will be developed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) and will be strategically located in Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata.

The project will enhance India’s scientific research capabilities across various domains. In Pune, the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) will utilize these supercomputers to investigate Fast Radio Bursts and other cosmic phenomena. Meanwhile, the Inter University Accelerator Centre in Delhi will focus on enhancing research in material science and atomic physics, and the S N Bose Centre in Kolkata will drive innovation in physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.

This initiative is crucial as India looks to improve its supercomputing infrastructure, especially with rising demands from academia, research organizations, and startups. The event originally included a broader agenda to dedicate projects worth Rs 22,600 crore across multiple sectors, but this was postponed due to heavy rains in Mumbai and Pune.

Stay tuned as India forges ahead in the realm of supercomputing, making strides that could redefine research and innovation in the country.
