Union Minister Annapurna Devi has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to implement existing laws effectively to combat violence against women. In her recent letter, she highlighted that the state has not activated 11 Fast Track Special Courts needed to handle rape and POCSO cases, despite a backlog of 48,600 such cases. Banerjee, responding to this issue, has called for stronger central legislation and quicker justice for heinous crimes like rape and murder, particularly following a recent tragic incident involving a doctor in Kolkata. Devi emphasized that the central government already provides stringent measures to address these crimes, and effective implementation at the state level is crucial for justice and accountability.

Union Minister Annapurna Devi has called on the West Bengal government to implement existing laws effectively to combat violence against women. In a recent letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, she highlighted the state’s failure to operationalize 11 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) designated for rape and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases. Currently, West Bengal has 88 Fast Track Courts, but they do not meet the specific needs covered under the central government’s scheme.

Banerjee, responding to a nationwide outcry following the tragic rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, has also reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for tougher legislation and mandatory time frames for resolving such grave cases. In her letters, she expressed concern over the backlog of approximately 48,600 cases related to rape and POCSO in the state.

Devi countered Banerjee’s claims about the judicial staffing necessary for FTSCs, stating that the guidelines already dictate full-time officers and staff to ensure efficiency in handling these sensitive cases. She urged the state to closely follow central laws, which include stringent penalties for heinous crimes, to strengthen the justice system and ultimately provide justice for victims and survivors.

Both leaders stress the importance of timely justice to restore faith in the legal system and protect vulnerable communities, as the issue of violence against women remains a critical concern across India.
