Maharashtra’s government has approved a major semiconductor fabrication unit to be built in Panvel, Mumbai, through a collaboration between the Adani Group and Israel’s Tower Semiconductor. This project, involving an investment of approximately Rs 83,947 crore ($10 billion), aims to produce 80,000 semiconductor wafers monthly in two phases. The first phase will invest Rs 58,763 crore, while the second will add Rs 25,184 crore. The initiative is expected to create over 5,000 direct jobs, contributing significantly to the local economy. If it receives approval from the India Semiconductor Mission, this facility will become the sixth semiconductor chip unit in India, following other recent approvals for similar projects.

Maharashtra’s cabinet has recently given the green light for a semiconductor fabrication unit to be set up in Panvel, Mumbai, in collaboration with the Adani Group and Israel’s Tower Semiconductor. This significant investment of around Rs 83,947 crore (approximately $10 billion) aims to bolster India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared details on social media, highlighting that the project will unfold in two phases. The initial phase will involve an investment of Rs 58,763 crore, aiming to produce 40,000 semiconductor wafers monthly, while the second phase, with an investment of Rs 25,184 crore, intends to double the production capacity to 80,000 wafers per month.

The establishment of this facility is also projected to create over 5,000 direct jobs, contributing positively to the local economy. It will be located in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) Taloja Industrial Area, which is already home to various industries.

This Tower-Adani venture marks a crucial development in India’s semiconductor landscape, being the second significant fabrication project after Tata’s Dholera plant, which received central government approval earlier this year. If the project gains approval from the India Semiconductor Mission, it will become the sixth semiconductor chip unit in the country, further enhancing India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

In recent months, several other semiconductor projects have been announced, alongside the government’s commitment to establishing a robust semiconductor ecosystem. The cumulative investments in these units are expected to reach around Rs 1.5 trillion, with a combined capacity of producing approximately 70 million chips per day. This burgeoning sector represents a vital step toward India’s technological self-sufficiency.
