Madhabi Puri Buch, the chairperson of SEBI, was expected to speak at a National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development event but did not attend. Instead, Pramod Rao, a SEBI executive director, highlighted green financing and the debt Market. Buch’s absence coincided with ongoing conflict of interest allegations from the Congress party, with her remaining silent on these claims since addressing earlier allegations by Hindenburg Research. The event featured discussions on enhancing credit ratings for infrastructure projects through new instruments and the increasing assets in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), surpassing alternative investment funds.
Madhabi Puri Buch, the Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), was expected to speak at a significant event organized by the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) but did not make an appearance. Instead, Pramod Rao, SEBI’s executive director, presented on crucial topics like green financing and aspects of the debt Market.
Buch’s no-show comes amidst ongoing allegations of conflicts of interest from the opposition Congress party. Although she previously addressed similar concerns raised by Hindenburg Research, she has not commented on the latest accusations.
During the conference, KV Kamath, chairman of NaBFID, highlighted new investment opportunities and the potential involvement of pension and insurance funds, along with improved credit profiles for infrastructure projects. Rajeshwar Rao, deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), noted that NaBFID could offer partial credit enhancements to infrastructure companies to bolster their credit ratings.
Pramod Rao remarked that NaBFID has been proactive in advocating for partial guarantees to attract investors to credible initiatives, specifically for municipal bonds. Since 2017, only about 10 municipalities have tapped this funding route, raising around Rs 2,684 crore.
Rao also pointed out that Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) have recently surpassed alternative investment funds (AIFs) in total assets under management, with a combined figure exceeding Rs 6.5 trillion compared to AIFs which stand at Rs 4 trillion. He emphasized that this growth is just the beginning, as there have been few outreach efforts similar to those for mutual funds.
