KVS Manian has officially started his role as the managing director and CEO of Federal Bank, taking over the position on Monday. With nearly 30 years of banking experience, including a long tenure at Kotak Mahindra Bank, Manian is expected to enhance the bank’s sustainable growth strategy. One of his main challenges will be to improve the bank’s deposit base, particularly as low-cost deposits have decreased. Federal Bank’s liquidity coverage ratio is currently healthy, but new RBI draft norms may necessitate adjustments. Analysts believe that focusing on higher-yielding products and improving net interest margins will be key to achieving better returns on assets and further strengthening the bank’s position in the Market.

KVS Manian has officially taken charge as the managing director and CEO of Federal Bank, a prominent private sector lender, as of Monday, September 23, 2024. His appointment comes with significant responsibility, as he aims to strengthen the bank’s deposit base and improve its liquidity coverage ratio (LCR).

Federal Bank has garnered investor interest due to its impressive asset quality and cautious growth strategy, particularly under the leadership of his predecessor, Shyam Srinivasan. Analysts believe that Manian, with nearly 30 years of banking experience, will be instrumental in navigating the bank toward sustainable growth.

One of the critical challenges for Manian is addressing the bank’s current LCR, which stands at about 111%-112%, slightly above the required 100%. Recent draft regulations by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may require the bank to maintain even higher LCR levels, potentially confronting it with a 10%-30% drop.

Additionally, Federal Bank has seen a decline in its current and savings account (CASA) deposits, a trend experienced industry-wide. The CASA ratio dropped to 29.27% by June 2024 from 31.85% the previous year. Despite having a strong deposit base, the bank has struggled to convert this into lower funding costs, prompting the need for strategic improvement in its product offerings and pricing structure.

With his extensive background, including a stint at Kotak Mahindra Bank, Manian is well-positioned to guide Federal Bank into a new era of growth and profitability.
