IndiGo Airlines is planning significant international expansion and improvements in its cargo operations to become a major global player by 2030. CEO Pieter Elbers announced the goal to double the number of international destinations to 40 by March 2025, targeting new markets for Indian travelers. The airline will also launch its business class offering, called ‘Stretch’, and a popular frequent flyer program. With an increasing demand for foreign travel from India, IndiGo aims to enhance its global presence through partnerships with airlines like Virgin Atlantic and Air France. Additionally, the introduction of wide-body aircraft beginning in 2027 will enable the airline to increase cargo capacity and support its growth ambitions in international markets.



IndiGo Airlines is making significant moves to expand its international reach and enhance cargo operations as it aims to become a leading global airline by 2030. According to a report from The Economic Times, company CEO Pieter Elbers announced plans to double the number of international destinations to 40 by March 2025, targeting new markets that appeal to Indian travelers.

To support this growth, IndiGo will also improve its cargo capabilities and introduce wide-body aircraft starting in 2027. Elbers, who recently celebrated two years with the airline, mentioned two additional strategies: the launch of a business class service called “Stretch” on major domestic routes by the end of the fiscal year and the introduction of a new frequent flyer program that has attracted considerable interest.

The airline’s international aspirations include forming codeshare partnerships with various airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM, and Qantas. This comes at a time when a report from MakeMyTrip revealed a 70 percent surge in searches among Indians for international travel, especially to emerging destinations like Almaty and Baku, where IndiGo is already operating.

IndiGo currently commands an 18 percent share of international routes, part of a larger Market where Indian airlines hold a total of 44 percent. Elbers noted that the airline’s domestic expansion has led to economic growth in places like Guwahati, and they aim to replicate this success globally.

By 2030, IndiGo plans to be competitive with international giants like Ryanair and Chinese airlines. In the most recent fiscal year, IndiGo ranked seventh globally for daily flights and fifth for passenger volume. The airline is also recognized for its punctuality, ranked fifth in 2023.

Cargo operations are set to become increasingly crucial for IndiGo’s strategy, particularly with the anticipated introduction of long-range A321 XLR aircraft by 2025 and wide-bodied A350s by 2027. This will support the airline’s goal of launching direct flights to North America, Europe, and Australia, while cargo tonnage grew by 20.2 percent in FY24.

As IndiGo moves forward with these ambitious plans, it is positioning itself as a major player in the skies, ready to meet the evolving demands of travelers and cargo transport alike.
