Microsoft and G42, backed by Mubadala, are set to build India’s largest supercomputer, capable of performing eight exaflops, or millions of trillion floating-point operations per second. G42 India CEO Manu Jain announced this project, along with a new Hindi language AI model named NANDA, which allows users to communicate in Hindi, English, and Hinglish. This initiative follows a recent memorandum of understanding signed between India and the UAE, focusing on enhancing digital infrastructure. The agreement includes establishing a massive 2 gigawatt data center, which will double India’s current data center capacity, and collaborating on AI model development. While the announcement does not provide a timeline for the supercomputer and data center, it highlights a commitment to AI inclusivity and representation of the Hindi language in technology.

Microsoft and Mubadala-backed G42 are teaming up to construct India’s largest supercomputer, boasting an impressive processing capacity of eight exaflops. This colossal machine will be capable of performing millions of trillions of floating-point operations every second, marking a significant advancement in India’s technological landscape.

During a recent announcement, G42 India CEO Manu Jain shared that a beta version of a new Hindi language large language model (LLM) has also been introduced. This AI engine will allow users to communicate in Hindi, English, and Hinglish—an increasingly popular blend of the two languages.

The initiative traces back to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE officials in Abu Dhabi, which focuses on enhancing digital infrastructure. Jain explained that G42 has been appointed as the implementation partner for this project, which includes the development of a massive 2 gigawatt data center in India to nearly double the current data center capacity.

The supercomputer will be developed in collaboration with Cerebras, and plans are also in place for co-developing AI models in India. Although Jain revealed exciting details about the supercomputer and the new LLM named NANDA, he did not specify the timeline for the completion of the data center and supercomputer.

NANDA, named after India’s highest peak, has already made a significant impact with its capabilities, being trained on a 13-billion parameter model that includes around 2.13 trillion tokens from various language datasets. G42’s commitment to AI inclusivity is evident as it strives to represent the rich heritage of the Hindi language within the digital and AI realms.

As India moves forward with these ambitious projects, the nation is set to usher in a new era of technology and digital communication.
