The Indian government is advancing plans to manufacture commercial aircraft domestically, as announced by Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu. A special purpose vehicle will be established to involve industry stakeholders in this initiative. The recently passed Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak Bill 2024 will regulate aircraft design and production, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at self-reliance. Naidu emphasized the goal of starting manufacturing activities within five years, positioning India as a significant player in both production and exports of aircraft. Additionally, there is a growing potential for maintenance, overhaul, and repair (MRO) services, further enhancing India’s aviation sector amid its rapid growth.

Union Minister K Rammohan Naidu recently announced exciting plans for India’s aviation sector. During a conference, he revealed that the government will establish a special purpose vehicle aimed at kicking off the manufacturing of commercial aircraft in the country. This initiative aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat push for self-reliance.

The Lok Sabha approved the Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak Bill 2024 in August, setting the stage for regulating aircraft design and manufacturing. Naidu emphasized that the government is committed to making India a key player in aircraft manufacturing and exports, aiming to start production within the next five years.

Currently, India is an attractive Market for major aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. While state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) already produces small civilian planes, this new initiative presents a greater opportunity to expand aircraft manufacturing on a larger scale.

Naidu underscored the immense potential for maintenance, overhaul, and repair (MRO) activities within the country, describing the Indian aviation sector as being at a transformative point. The new bill not only aims to modernize aviation regulations but replaces the outdated Aircraft Act of 1934, which has undergone 21 amendments.

With plans to turn India into a hub for aviation, air cargo, and MRO services, the future looks bright for the country’s aviation industry.
