India has made significant strides in global research, ranking among the top five countries in 45 out of 64 critical technologies in 2023, a substantial increase from 37 the previous year. The Critical Technology Tracker report reveals that India now holds the second position in key areas such as biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology, overtaking the US in these emerging fields. Additionally, India ranks just behind the US and China in various aspects of artificial intelligence, showcasing its growing technological capabilities. Despite these advancements, the report notes that India’s research landscape lacks standout institutions, which could hinder its ability to attract foreign talent and retain local scientists.

India has made significant strides in research and technology, becoming a global leader in 2023. A recent report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute reveals that India now ranks among the top five countries in 45 out of 64 critical technologies, an impressive improvement from 37 rankings just a year earlier. Notably, India claimed the second position in seven cutting-edge technologies.

In particular, India has surpassed the United States in two emerging fields: biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology. The country is rapidly advancing in artificial intelligence (AI) as well, falling just behind the US and China in areas such as advanced data analytics, machine learning, and natural language processing.

This progress is striking when compared to data from 2003 to 2007, where India only ranked in the top five for four technologies. The research covered in the report spans various domains, including space, defense, and cybersecurity. It tracks high-impact research, defined as the top 10 percent of the most-cited papers, which serves as a benchmark for assessing a nation’s research capabilities and future potential.

While China currently leads the world, dominating 57 out of 64 critical technologies, the United States has seen a decline, now only excelling in seven areas. The UK also dropped in rankings, now standing in the top five in 37 technologies from 44 the previous year. Despite these challenges, India has secured second-place rankings in several important fields, such as smart materials and biofuels.

However, the report points out a significant challenge for India: the lack of standout institutions in research. Only five Indian institutions have made it into the top five in any of the 64 technologies over the past two decades. This fragmentation could hinder India’s ability to attract global research talent and retain its own scientists.

As India continues to build its research profile, the country remains poised for further advancements in technology and innovation.
