Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in India have shown improved performance, signaling better employment prospects for students. In the latest grading by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, nearly 19% of approximately 15,000 ITIs scored above 8 out of 10, up from 12.4% last year. The highest scorers, with grades of 9.6, are located in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. This development follows the FY25 Budget announcement to skill two million youths over five years, with plans to upgrade 1,000 ITIs. The new grading system evaluates ITIs based on admissions and exam results, aiming to enhance curriculum and infrastructure. This initiative is expected to boost competitiveness and help ITIs align with industry needs.

In a positive sign for job seekers, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have shown improved performance this year, according to a new grading system by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. This year, 18.9% of the approximately 15,000 graded ITIs achieved scores above 8 out of 10, a notable increase from 12.4% last year.

Among those recognized for excellence, the Government ITI for Girls in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, and the Government ITI in Barbil, Odisha, stand out with impressive grades of 9.6. This development aligns with the recent announcement in the FY25 Budget, which aims to skill two million youths over the next five years, including upgrading 1,000 ITIs.

This year, 14,999 ITIs were graded, and interestingly, 142 of them received grades of 9 or above. A significant majority, about 12,700 ITIs, scored 4 and above, enabling these institutions to introduce modern courses in areas like 3D printing and drone technology.

Experts like Sumit Kumar from TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship emphasize that this grading system will enhance the competitiveness of ITIs and help them meet industry standards by improving their curriculum and infrastructure. The grading process evaluates ITIs based on several parameters, giving weight to factors like admissions and passing rates.

With instructor availability to be included in future evaluations and a “Star Rating” for those scoring 9.5 and above, the initiative aims to strengthen the vocational training landscape further.

This progress indicates a promising trend towards better training and employment opportunities for the youth in India.
