Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, emphasized the central government’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring their safety during her address at Mahatma Mandir on August 31, 2024. This statement came during the inauguration of the seventh edition of “Poshan Maah,” India’s nationwide nutrition month which takes place every September.

Devi highlighted the importance of state governments in implementing various safety schemes aimed at protecting women. She pointed out that while the central government has rolled out several initiatives, it is vital for state authorities to effectively leverage these programs.

The Minister referred to “Poshan Maah” as a crucial effort to improve health and nutrition standards among women and children, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to holistic health. The campaign focuses on issues such as anemia awareness, growth monitoring, and the introduction of appropriate dietary supplements through community-driven efforts, particularly in anganwadis.

With over 3.7 crore community-based events organized since the launch of “Poshan Maah,” the campaign aims to tackle nutritional challenges faced by pregnant women, new mothers, adolescent girls, and children under six. Furthermore, Devi mentioned the “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” program, which integrates nutrition with education in anganwadis, and aims to equip local workers with the necessary training to serve as educators as well as food providers.

The implementation of the Poshan Tracker, designed to enhance the effectiveness of Mission Poshan 2.0, and the inclusion of millets in nutritional recipes were also noted. Additionally, with more than Rs 3 lakh crore allocated for women’s projects, the Minister signaled a strong government focus on women-led development.

Devi praised the Gujarat government’s sensitivity towards women’s safety, singling out the 181 helpline for women as a model worthy of replication in other states. This event underlines the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of women and children across India.
