Bharat Biotech has signed an agreement with The Society for Advancement of Human Endeavor (SAHE) to restore historic stepwells at Ammapalli Temple and Salar Jung Museum in Telangana. This initiative aims to preserve cultural heritage, promote water conservation, and enhance eco-heritage tourism. The memorandum was signed in the presence of Telangana’s Chief Minister and other officials, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding the region’s legacy. Historically, these stepwells, like the one at Ammapalli Temple dating back to the 13th century, served local communities. With many traditional water sources diminishing, restoring these structures can significantly improve groundwater management and inspire community engagement with their rich heritage.

Bharat Biotech Teams Up with SAHE to Revitalize Stepwells in Telangana

In a significant move to preserve cultural heritage, Bharat Biotech signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Society for Advancement of Human Endeavor (SAHE) on September 28, 2024. This partnership aims to rejuvenate and restore the historic stepwells at Ammapalli Temple and Salar Jung Museum in Telangana.

Bharat Biotech’s restoration initiative is not just about bringing back the beauty of these ancient structures; it also focuses on promoting water conservation and enhancing eco-heritage tourism in the region. “By restoring these step-wells, we are supporting the community and its rich heritage,” said Suchitra Ella, Managing Director of Bharat Biotech.

The memorandum was formalized in the presence of Telangana’s Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and other key government officials. This project aligns with the government’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, highlighting the commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.

Stepwells, which were once critical sources of water for communities, are fascinating examples of ancient engineering. The Ammapalli Temple stepwell, believed to be over 700 years old, once served as a vital water source for local pilgrims. However, many smaller stepwells face neglect and deterioration, often making way for urban development.

As India grapples with severe groundwater depletion, revitalizing these stepwells could help capture rainwater and replenish vital groundwater supplies during the monsoon. Bharat Biotech’s partnership with SAHE and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) aims not only to restore these historic sites but also to educate the public about their cultural significance.

The project stands as a testament to the importance of our historical structures, encouraging future generations to engage with and appreciate our rich cultural legacy while promoting sustainable water management practices in the face of growing urban challenges.
