Air India is making significant strides in the aviation industry with the establishment of a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru. This facility is projected to generate over 1,200 direct jobs for skilled aviation engineers, along with seven times more indirect jobs for the local community, according to Campbell Wilson, the CEO of Air India. The ground-breaking ceremony for this state-of-the-art facility was held recently at the Bangalore International Airport on a 35-acre site.

The Karnataka government has partnered with Air India to develop this MRO facility, which signifies a major investment in the region. Wilson emphasized that creating one job at the airport could lead to the generation of seven additional jobs, highlighting the facility’s potential impact on the local economy. The MRO project, which has an allocation of Rs 1,400 crore, aims to serve as a vital hub for Air India’s expanding fleet and global operations.

This upcoming facility is not just about jobs; it will also feature a mega hangar capable of accommodating different types of aircraft. Equipped with advanced maintenance technology such as overhead tele platforms and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in the country, the MRO is on track to become fully operational by 2026.

In addition to the MRO, Air India plans to open a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation in Bengaluru by 2025, which will provide essential training for aspiring engineers. This initiative reflects the airline’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce in India’s quickly growing aviation sector.

With these developments, Air India is not only enhancing its own operational capabilities but also contributing to the broader goal of creating a self-reliant aviation ecosystem in India.
