Air India, under the Tata Group’s ownership since 2022, is striving to modernize its outdated fleet as part of a five-year turnaround plan. CEO Campbell Wilson pointed out that the airline faces significant challenges, including global parts shortages and the need for equipment upgrades. Air India’s efforts include placing significant orders for new planes and initiating a $400 million project to retrofit older aircraft. Despite recent improvements, such as a 21% capacity increase and reduced net losses, the airline continues to grapple with flight delays and an aging fleet. The merger of its low-cost carriers and the development of a maintenance facility are key steps towards revitalizing the airline and regaining customer trust.

Air India is on a journey to transform itself into a global airline two years after the Tata Group took over control in a $2.4 billion deal. However, the airline faces significant challenges, primarily due to outdated aircraft and global parts shortages that lead to frequent flight delays. CEO Campbell Wilson acknowledges that the airline is operating at a disadvantage, with many of its planes remaining unchanged since their delivery in 2010 and 2011.

To address these issues, Air India has made substantial investments, including a massive order for new aircraft and a $400 million project aimed at refurbishing older planes. Wilson stated that improving the premium seating and in-flight services is essential for attracting high-paying customers. Of the 470 new aircraft orders, 70 are wide-body jets, with six Airbus A350s and 11 Boeing 777s already delivered.

The airline’s approach to reposition itself in the Market includes a focus on its most profitable long-haul routes, guaranteeing modern planes for key international destinations, such as Mumbai to San Francisco and Delhi to London. Despite these plans, challenges persist, particularly in flight punctuality, with only a small percentage of flights to Europe and North America arriving on time.

Looking ahead, Air India is committed to upgrading its fleet and establishing its own maintenance facilities to reduce delays. By 2026, the airline’s partnership with Singapore Airlines should also support this transition. As Wilson reflects on the journey so far, he believes that despite the hurdles, significant progress has been made in stabilizing the airline.
