Omar Abdullah, the vice-president of the National Conference, has emphasized his party’s commitment to removing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir if elected. He noted that his party aims to end the harassment of Kashmiri youth and streamline the passport verification process while creating job opportunities and ensuring access to essential resources for every household. Abdullah criticized the BJP for rejecting the party’s manifesto, which he believes genuinely reflects the aspirations of the people. As elections approach, Abdullah and the National Conference seek to address the concerns of various communities, advocating for a roadmap to tackle the region’s issues effectively. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections are set to take place in September and October 2024.

The upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are heating up, with National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah making significant promises to the electorate. Speaking on August 31, Abdullah pledged that if his party is elected, they will prioritize lifting the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), aimed at ending the “unjust harassment faced by Kashmiri youth.” This commitment echoes Abdullah’s earlier efforts from 2012, during his time as chief minister, when he attempted to revoke the controversial legislation but faced resistance from the army.

In addition to addressing AFSPA, Abdullah highlighted the party’s broader agenda, which includes streamlining the passport verification process, creating job opportunities, and ensuring access to essential resources for every household without adding financial strain. He emphasized that the National Conference’s manifesto reflects the true aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which he claims has been rejected by rival parties, particularly the BJP.

Abdullah, who is contesting from the Ganderbal seat, stated that the National Conference aims to win the elections through a constructive approach rather than fear tactics. He detailed a comprehensive manifesto that addresses the needs of various groups, including artisans, unemployed youth, and agriculturalists, providing clear solutions to their concerns.

The important assembly elections for the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with results expected on October 8. The National Conference has formed a seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress, agreeing to contest 51 and 32 seats, respectively.

As the election season unfolds, the promises and plans put forth by Omar Abdullah and his party could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
