As Ukraine works to strengthen its drone industry, few foreign companies, like the US startup Shield AI, are succeeding in the Market. Founded by a former Navy Seal and his brother, Shield AI uses artificial intelligence to help drones navigate and hit targets, even in the face of electronic jamming from Russian forces. Their V-BAT drones are equipped with advanced technology, allowing them to operate without a remote pilot or GPS for long durations. Although Ukraine produces many low-cost drones, advanced models like V-BAT are rare. A major contract for these advanced drones could significantly boost Shield AI’s revenues, but future support depends on political factors in the US.

As Ukraine works to strengthen its own drone manufacturing, only a few foreign companies are successfully entering the Market. One of them is Shield AI, a startup from the U.S. founded by a former Navy Seal and his brother. This company uses advanced artificial intelligence to help drones navigate and find their targets, which is crucial given the electronic warfare tactics employed by Russian forces in the area.

Shield AI’s V-BAT drone stands out because it is equipped with AI software, sensors, and powerful Nvidia chips. This technology allows the drone to operate without needing a remote pilot or GPS. Capable of flying for up to 12 hours and reaching distances of 600 miles, the V-BAT can also carry explosives weighing 25 pounds.

The V-BAT has been tested in real combat situations in Ukraine, where it was able to operate effectively even in heavily jammed environments. A Ukrainian pilot who tested the V-BAT remarked that many drones fail in such challenging conditions, but this one performed well.

In terms of business, Shield AI is looking to supply over 200 of these advanced drones to Ukraine, potentially increasing its revenue significantly. However, the company currently produces about 120 units a year, which falls short of Ukraine’s high demand. Despite Ukraine having around 200 local drone manufacturers, most produce low-cost drones rather than sophisticated models like the V-BAT.

Thus far, only a few foreign companies, such as Turkey’s Baykar and Germany’s Quantum Systems, have made their way into the Ukrainian drone Market. The continuing conflict and the need for technology that can withstand electronic jamming present ongoing challenges for drone manufacturers looking to enter or grow in Ukraine.
