Where did you grow up and how did you find out about computers?
Vasek: Tomas and I, my co-founder, grew up in the Czech Republic. I hail from a small town named Uherske Hradiste. My first encounter with computers was my dad’s IBM laptop. I mainly used it to play games like Doom and Prince of Persia on DOS. Interestingly, as a child, I was more drawn to animal medicine and physics. I spent my summers at my dad’s veterinary clinic, assisting in surgeries instead of diving into the world of computers.
How did you and Tomas meet, and what was your startup journey together?
Vasek: Tomas and I have known each other for over a decade. We met in high school, initially bonding over board games and later min-maxing in Eve Online. This led us to explore game development, where we learned Python and eventually transitioned to creating games on iPhones using Unity and C#. Through our journey, we discovered a passion for developer tools, prompting us to embark on summer hackathons. Our first product was Devbook, but we pivoted to E2B in early 2023.
How are customers using the product today, and what has the initial response looked like from developers?
Vasek: E2B has seen rapid growth, with tens of thousands of developers utilizing our platform. Just last April, we had created 20,000 sandboxes for our customers, and by September, that number surged to 2 million. Our users engage with E2B in various ways, primarily focusing on projects at the forefront of AI. Notable users include HuggingFace, applying E2B for reinforcement learning with their Open R1 model, and LMArena, which employs our sandboxes for Web-Arena evaluations.
We also cater to enterprise customers like Perplexity and PGA, primarily using E2B for AI data analysis and visualization. The LLM generates code that runs in our secure cloud environments, returning results that clients can easily showcase.
What is your vision for “The AI Agents Cloud,” and where are you starting?
Our groundwork for code interpretation is just the beginning. We aim to create a cloud runtime for AI agents, which we see as a foundational element of Cloud 2.0. Last year, we introduced the Desktop Sandbox, allowing users to connect to any LLMs and interact with cloud computers visually. This feature enables clients to utilize web applications without being limited to APIs and code.
Additionally, our app called Fragments, an open-source version of Claude Artifacts, lets LLMs develop full-scale applications using frameworks like Next.js and Gradio in our sandboxes. Eventually, we envision E2B as a platform where AI agents can not only run but also deploy and manage their services.
