In 2019, Microsoft introduced Dapr, an open-source framework designed to simplify the building of distributed microservice applications. Recently, the Dapr team launched Dapr Agents, aimed at helping developers create AI agents. Dapr’s core feature, called actors, allows these agents to process messages independently, making them efficient and scalable. The Dapr Agents project emerged from the Floki initiative, which adapted Dapr for AI applications, ensuring continued support and development. Dapr Agents can seamlessly connect with popular AI models like AWS Bedrock and OpenAI, with support for local language models coming soon. Currently, Dapr Agents support Python, with plans to expand to .NET, Java, JavaScript, and Go in the future.

Microsoft has taken a significant step forward in the realm of artificial intelligence with the launch of Dapr Agents. Originally introduced in 2019 as an open-source project to simplify the creation of microservice-based applications, Dapr incorporated features valuable for developing AI-driven agents right from the start. One of its key components, the actor model, allows independent processing of messages, setting the foundation for scalable AI agent development.

Dapr Agents aim to provide developers with essential tools for building AI agents more efficiently. Yaron Schneider, a co-creator of Dapr, emphasized that while the technology allows for lightweight actor management and state handling, developers still face challenges in writing the agent’s business logic. Unlike other frameworks, Dapr combines orchestration and statefulness, making it a unique choice for developers venturing into AI agent development.

The platform’s evolution stems from Floki, a popular project that enhanced Dapr for AI functionality. Conversations between maintainers, including Microsoft AI researcher Roberto Rodriguez, led to integrating Floki within the Dapr framework to maintain consistency in the agent framework’s development.

Dapr’s flexibility allows it to adapt to what Schneider and fellow co-creator Mark Fussell call a shift from microservices to “agentic systems.” This change reflects the inclusion of large language models, facilitating richer interactions among agents. To manage these agents effectively, Dapr provides an orchestration engine that can start and stop actors quickly while preserving their state, enhancing efficiency.

Dapr Agents are designed to communicate seamlessly with major AI model providers, including AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Hugging Face, with local model support on the horizon. This functionality opens doors for developers to create agents equipped with the tools necessary to tackle specific tasks.

Currently, Dapr Agents support Python, with plans to extend compatibility to .NET, Java, JavaScript, and Go in the near future. This flexible framework positions developers to harness the full potential of AI in their applications, making Dapr Agents a significant addition to the evolving landscape of AI technology.
