The U.S. Secret Service has taken significant action against the Russian cryptocurrency exchange Garantex, which is accused of supporting money laundering and violating sanctions. On March 6, they seized three of Garantex’s website domains and froze over $26 million in cryptocurrency linked to illegal activities. This move comes after Garantex reportedly processed around $96 billion in transactions since 2019, often related to serious crimes like hacking and terrorism. Two individuals, a Lithuanian and a Russian national, were indicted for their roles in the operation. Additionally, law enforcement from Germany and Finland helped by seizing servers related to Garantex to further disrupt its operations globally.

The United States Secret Service Takes Action Against Garantex Cryptocurrency Exchange

In a significant international effort, the U.S. Secret Service has seized multiple website domains linked to the Russian cryptocurrency exchange, Garantex. This action is part of a crackdown on operations that allegedly facilitate money laundering and sanctions violations for terrorist organizations. Since its inception in April 2019, Garantex has processed an alarming $96 billion in cryptocurrency transactions.

On March 6, the Secret Service seized three domains—Garantex.org, Garantex.io, and Garantex academy. These sites were essential for Garantex’s operations and will now display a law enforcement notice regarding their seizure. As a result, Garantex’s owners and associated parties can no longer utilize these sites for illicit financial activities. Additionally, over $26 million in cryptocurrency transactions linked to Garantex have been frozen to hinder their money laundering schemes.

Michael Centrella, Assistant Director of the U.S. Secret Service’s Office of Field Operations, emphasized the importance of this operation, stating, “This coordinated action will prevent additional funds from falling into the hands of criminals.”

The Department of Justice further revealed that Garantex had been involved in enabling various crimes such as hacking, ransomware, and drug trafficking, significantly impacting victims in the U.S. Two individuals, Aleksej Besciokov and Aleksandr Mira Serda, are facing indictments for their roles in Garantex’s operations. Allegations claim that they actively concealed the illegal activities occurring on the platform.

In collaboration with German and Finnish authorities, law enforcement has also seized servers that hosted Garantex’s operations worldwide, effectively shutting down their infrastructure. The FBI provided valuable assistance during this extensive investigation.

This comprehensive operation illustrates the determination of U.S. and international law enforcement agencies to combat cryptocurrency-related crimes and ensure that criminals face justice.
