Three men have been indicted for running Bitcoin mixing services that allegedly helped criminals launder stolen cryptocurrency. Roman Vitalyevich Ostapenko, Alexander Evgenievich Oleynik, and Anton Vyachlavovich Tarasov operated two websites, Blender.io and Sinbad.io, which were designed to hide transaction details for users. These sites gained popularity among criminals for allowing them to obscure their transaction histories, making it easier to clean money obtained from ransomware and virtual currency thefts. The U.S. Attorney emphasized the commitment to dismantling cybercriminal networks. Ostapenko and Oleynik were arrested, while Tarasov is still at large, with the case being investigated by the FBI.

Three Men Indicted for Laundering Cryptocurrency

Three men have been indicted for allegedly providing Bitcoin concealment services that criminals used to launder stolen cryptocurrencies. The suspects, Roman Vitalyevich Ostapenko, Alexander Evgenievich Oleynik, and Anton Vyachlavovich Tarasov, faced charges from a federal grand jury for operating two websites, Blender.io and Sinbad.io.

According to U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan, these sites were known globally for helping criminals launder funds obtained through ransomware attacks and virtual currency thefts. “This indictment shows our ongoing commitment to dismantling the infrastructure used by cybercriminals to rob Americans and hide their profits,” he stated.

Blender.io and Sinbad.io promoted a “no logs policy,” assuring users that their transaction details were deleted, which made them attractive for illicit activities. The sites required minimal information from users, only the recipient’s address, effectively allowing total anonymity in transactions.

Federal authorities further disclosed that Blender.io was linked to multiple ransomware groups, as noted by the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

The charges against the suspects include conspiracy to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. Ostapenko, who is 55 years old and from Russia, faces one count of conspiracy and two counts of operating without a license. Oleynik, aged 44, and Tarasov, who is 32, are each charged with conspiracy and unlicensed money operation as well.

While Ostapenko and Oleynik were arrested on December 1, 2024, Tarasov remains at large. This investigation is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

As cybercrime continues to rise, this case highlights the significant efforts made by law enforcement to combat such illegal activities in the cryptocurrency space.
