On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted three Russian individuals—Roman Ostapenko, Alexander Oleynik, and Anton Tarasov—for allegedly running cryptocurrency services that assisted criminals in laundering money. They were linked to two mixers, Bender.io and Sinbad.io, which the Justice Department claims were used to hide funds from crimes such as ransomware and wire fraud. Bender.io and Sinbad.io were seized in a law enforcement operation earlier this year and were reportedly used by North Korean hackers. Ostapenko and Oleynik were arrested, while Tarasov remains at large. They face serious charges that could result in up to 30 years in prison for money laundering and operating unlicensed businesses.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that three Russian citizens have been indicted for allegedly helping criminals launder money through cryptocurrencies. Roman Vitalyevich Ostapenko, Alexander Evgenievich Oleynik, and Anton Vyachlavovich Tarasov are accused of running two cryptocurrency mixing services called Bender.io and Sinbad.io. These mixers are said to have provided a way for criminals to hide the origins of their illegally obtained funds, including profits from ransomware attacks and wire fraud.

The DOJ emphasized the severity of the charges, highlighting that these mixers acted as shelters for rinsing off criminal earnings. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brent Wible stated that the trio’s operations posed serious risks to public safety and national security. Notably, Bender.io and Sinbad.io were seized during a significant law enforcement effort last year and are suspected to have ties to North Korean hackers.

While Ostapenko and Oleynik were arrested on December 1, 2024, Tarasov has not yet been apprehended. Each faces substantial legal penalties. Ostapenko is charged with money laundering and running an unlicensed money transmitting business, while Oleynik and Tarasov are implicated in conspiracy to commit money laundering, which could lead to a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years.

As authorities continue to crack down on crypto-related crimes, this case is a crucial reminder of the efforts to combat financial misconduct in the digital currency space.
