Microsoft expands AI Copilot to Personal and Family subscribers, sparking controversy over rising costs and potential academic integrity issues.

Microsoft is expanding its Copilot AI features to all Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in select Asia-Pacific countries. Previously available only through a costly Copilot Pro subscription, these features will now be accessible at an additional monthly fee of $20, alongside the already existing subscription cost. Subscribers in the regions will also gain access to the Microsoft Designer app for image creation. However, users will only receive a limited number of AI credits each month, and prices for existing subscriptions are set to increase. While the rollout is regional for now, Microsoft is likely to introduce similar features to other markets, including the US, in the future.

Microsoft is making waves by announcing an expansion of its Copilot feature, which will soon be available for users with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions. Currently, these advanced AI tools are part of the pricey Copilot Pro subscription, costing users an additional $20 monthly on top of their basic subscription fee.

With the latest update, users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand can look forward to enjoying the benefits of Copilot along with the Microsoft Designer app. Existing subscribers will automatically gain access once they update their apps. However, it’s important to note that while the primary subscriber of a Family plan will benefit from these features, sharing them with other family members won’t be possible.

The new offer, however, comes with a catch: subscription prices are set to increase with the next renewal. For example, in Australia, one user reported a jump from AU$139 to AU$179. For those who prefer not to use AI features, Microsoft will continue to offer a Classic version of Microsoft 365 that maintains previous pricing.

Currently, the free Copilot features are not available in other regions like the US and Western Europe, but many anticipate this will change soon. Microsoft’s strategy often involves testing new offerings regionally before a global rollout, and this expansion looks no different.

As Microsoft invests heavily in AI, the reception of these changes is mixed, with some users expressing concerns over unwanted features and the impact on device performance. If you’re interested in taking your productivity to the next level, the new updates could be a game-changer.
