Gandhi Vatika, a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, is set to open on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. Originally inaugurated last year under former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, the opening was delayed by nearly a year due to political disputes. Gehlot’s recent protests prompted the current Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to finally approve its public opening. This Rs 85 crore project aims to promote Gandhian values and educate the youth about Gandhi’s contributions to India’s freedom movement through virtual displays. Despite excitable public sentiment, the museum’s inauguration has stirred political tensions, with accusations and criticisms exchanged between party leaders.

Gandhi Vatika, a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, is set to open to the public on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi’s birth anniversary. This project was initiated by the previous Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government and established by the Gandhi Peace Foundation. Despite delays in its completion, Gehlot’s insistence and a planned dharna outside the museum last week have propelled the opening forward after a nearly year-long wait.

The project, funded with Rs 85 crore, aims to promote Gandhi’s teachings and values among the youth. It features interactive displays showcasing significant events from India’s freedom struggle, ensuring that Gandhi’s legacy remains alive. The initiative is viewed as a cultural effort to preserve Gandhian philosophies in response to concerns about diminishing recognition of Gandhi’s contributions.

Although Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma announced the museum’s opening in response to Gehlot’s protests, the occasion has stirred political controversy. State Education Minister Madan Dilawar criticized the Congress Party’s past management of the project and claimed that certain historical representations in the museum were inappropriate.

Despite the political tussle, the opening of Gandhi Vatika is a moment of joy for many Gandhian thinkers and followers, providing a renewed opportunity to reflect on Gandhiji’s values of truth and non-violence.
